Garden Police Solution:
We were fortunate that the lawn was in decent shape and didn't have to be taken out completely, only fertilized and aerated. There was still plenty to do to prepare the yard for a new design, including the following:
- Remove a section of lawn under the big shade tree. Grass doesn't belong under a tree's drip line because it poses a risk to the tree every time you mow up to the trunk.
- Remove the narrow concrete walkway along the front of the house. The 2-foot wide concrete strip is in the middle of our proposed garden bed and is not used and we need this space to plant out the foundation of the house. Reuse the broken concrete pieces to heighten the existing retaining wall in the side yard.
- Carve out new garden beds throughout the yard to give it definition. The present "garden beds" are to small for the scale of the yard and "disappear" from the curb.
- Dig out an area for an informal sitting area near the entry.
- Paint the entry walkway and take out the killer rose bushes to prepare the area for flagstone in order to widen the walkway.

Shirley adds fertilizer to the lawn and aerates it with a push aerator machine.

The Green Team (led by landscaper Gabriel Rodriquez),
remove some hazardous plants.
