The Garden Plan: The yard was very small and called for a simple design. The plan was to give the family a private yard where they could relax and play together without being on display to the neighborhood. Michael and I designed a clean contemporary landscape that incorporated a paver patio with lounge area, fountain, shade tree, new Marathon Sod lawn, hedge for privacy, simple garden, potted plants and lighting to enjoy it all at night. The entry needed beautifying also so we commissioned sculptor/artist Simon Sananas to design a custom mural for the family that reflected their love of African art and lots of color.
Design Controversy: Michael and I don't always agree on design details and this was one of those times. Michael had his heart set on a hammock and I thought the yard was too small for it. It would look like Noah's arc had landed! We went back and forth presenting our sides when Fluke who is a former high school basketball coach, stepped in. He said that around his house, issues are settled in court, the basketball court. He made us play a modified version of the game "H O R S E," which today he called "H A M M O C K." Towards the end, Fluke took over Michael's shots and of course, with his experience, tossed the winning shot. I took it like a good sport, because after all, the Fluker's really wanted the hammock and that is all that mattered.
